Fish

Hybrid Striped Bass

Very versatile because of its clean taste and firm, but flakey texture.  This fish can be consumed raw, sashimi-style or made into a ceviche.  For cooking preparations it lends well to pan-searing with the skin on, grilling whole, poaching and baking.

Lake Trout

Lake trout have roughly the same amount of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) as sockeye salmon. The flesh of lake trout is firm, rich in flavor and white to red (often orange) in color. It is oily and is often enjoyed smoked.

Bluegill

This is the life blood of all good ponds or lakes. The bluegill AKA Copper nose/Bream is a sunfish that most people identify with in a fishery. This is a food source for your bass population and for the supper table. Bluegill should be stocked at a rate of 500-1500 per acre.

Tilapia

Tilapia are flaky and mild-tasting. They are lean fish that have lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids than fattier fish species.

White Shrimp

Pacific white shrimp are popular because they have a clean, sweet taste with a classic shrimp flavor and firm texture. They are bluish-gray or greenish-gray when raw but turn pink when cooked.

Catfish

Given that catfish is a good source of various nutrients but low in calories, it’s considered nutrient dense. In fact, it may provide a number of benefits

About Us

Freedom Fisheries, LLC is a Veteran owned and operated company producing locally-grown fresh fish for regional markets in Newbern and the surrounding areas.  We us Superior Raceways™ (patented*) system in two 2.5 acre ponds. The ponds are located in Newbern, AL.

Freedom Fisheries LLC. has been consulting with Jay Warecki, Ph.D. (Dr. Jay), Director of Superior Aquaculture, LLC. to assist in the project planning.  Dr. Warecki makes all recommendations based on his experience in the industry.  The Superior Raceways™ systems are designed with efficiency, expandability, and practicality in mind.

Superior Raceways™ offers the aquaculture industry a new and unique tool for farming a wide variety of fish, shellfish, and aquaponic vegetables – all improving local food security. The floating raceways, sometimes called “in-pond raceways”, or “in-pond RAS”, systems, now permit local fish farming and locally grown, organic aquaponics in reservoirs, fish and HSB ponds, quarries, mines, marshes, estuaries, and stump-filled ponds formerly unusable.

Aquaculture

Aquaculture is the propagation and rearing of aquatic species in controlled or selected environments. Globally, aquaculture is an important method of seafood production and plays an important role in food security. While the U.S. is not a major aquaculture producer (ranking 14th), National Marine Fishery Service (NMFS) estimates that over half of the seafood that the U.S. imports comes from aquaculture. Additionally, aquaculture plays an important role in producing many popular seafood products, including salmon, oysters, and clams in the U.S. as well as imported shrimp. In 2013, estimated freshwater plus marine U.S. aquaculture production was 653 million pounds with a value of $1.38 billion, an increase of 59 million pounds (10%) in volume and 145 million (12%) in value from 2012.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that nearly half of the world’s consumption of seafood comes from aquaculture. Globally, Asia is the leading continent for aquaculture production volume with 89 percent of the global total of 70.2 million metric tons. The top five producing countries are in Asia: China, with 62 percent of the global total; India, 6 percent; Indonesia, 5 percent; Viet Nam, 5 percent; and Bangladesh 3 percent. The United States ranks fourteenth in production.

Aquaculture by Continent, 2014

  • Africa 2%
  • North America 2%
  • South America 3%
  • Europe 4%
  • Asia 89%

Per Capita Consumption

Estimated U.S. per capita consumption of fish and shellfish was 14.6 pounds (edible meat) in 2014. This total was essentially unchanged from the 14.5 pounds consumed in 2013. The small change is due to an increase in consumption of fresh and frozen seafood. This increase offset a decrease in the estimate of the consumption of canned seafood, which was caused by a decrease in canned salmon production in 2014
Per capita consumption of fresh and frozen products was 10.9 pounds, an increase of 0.4 pounds from 2013. Fresh and frozen finfish accounted for 5.9 pounds, while fresh and frozen shellfish consumption was 5.0 pounds per capita.
There have been changes in American’s fish/seafood species’ preferences over time. Shrimp became the number one consumed seafood product in the U.S. in 2002 and has stayed in this position ever since. In 2013 Salmon supplanted canned Tuna as the number two preferred seafood. Canned tuna is now in third place and with shrimp and salmon above two pounds consumed per person.
